Reason: Linux 7.3 release candidates as a dist-kernel, opt-in only. ::gentoo never ships an -rc dist-kernel (its -rc kernels are git-sources, sources only), so this pair has nothing upstream to defer to. It must stay masked because 7.3_rc5 sorts above 7.2.x: unmasked, every ~arch user's next world update would move them onto a release candidate, and out-of-tree modules such as nvidia-drivers still cap MODULES_KERNEL_MAX at 7.2. The virtual is masked with the kernel. It RDEPENDs on the exact ~sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-${PV}, so an unmasked 7.3_rc virtual would be visible while the only kernel that satisfies it is not. The atoms are deliberately unqualified: Portage stamps them "::bentoo", which is where these ebuilds live. To opt in, unmask both: =sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-7.3_rc* =virtual/dist-kernel-7.3_rc* Remove this entry with the last 7.3_rc ebuild, once ::gentoo ships its first 7.3 dist-kernel.
